Checked mail

Does it make sense to say:

"I sent the letter by checked mail."

Note: By 'checked mail', I mean the safest way through which the recipient has to sign a note acknowledging receipt of the letter.

The terminology may differ between countries, but it's called "registered mail" in the U.S.
