Checked by operating

"The product should be checked by operating several times."

Is this sentence correct?
I wonder because the product does not operate. It is being operated.
So I thought I should say
"The product should be checked by being operated several time."

When I use the Microsoft Word grammar check, it detects an error when I write "by operating".
But when I google, "check by being operated" gets NO hit, and "checked by operating" gets 210 thousand hits (limiting the region to the US).
