Yes, they are correct (with a small change in the last one).

The first and second are nearly identical in meaning. The second can be used in the case where the event happened quite a long time ago if you use 'was'. That's not so easily done in the case of the first sentence.

The third sentence requires a reference point in the past before which this event occurred, e.g.,

At that time we were put in an awkward position of having to change the schedule. (We knew this because) we had checked and found that the task was still in progress.

had checked and (had) found occurred before the past reference time (we were put in an awkward position).
