Check two sentences please

Hi. Are these two sentences correct? Please see my comments, too.

He was delighted when asked to come to the school event, as he liked some of the things they were going to feature: reading story books and free chocolate pies. -- Is it correct to use a colon in what looks to be a subordinate clause following the word (or what is it?) "as"?

He was met by people making it known that John Doe coming there wasn't welcomed. -- Shouldn't the name "John Doe" the possessive "John Doe's"?
