Check these simple sentences please

Hi. Please tell me if they are correct. How about the words in parentheses for numbers 3, 4 and 5? Is it incorrect to have them in the sentences? On second thoughts, I think it is incorrect to put the preposition "in" or "at" at the end of the sentence for no. 3, and the reason I can think of is that generally the word "place" contains the positional aspect of "where" for the types of sentences like numbers 1, 2 and 3. (I hope what I said correctly reflects what I wanted to say, but not sure, though.) In addition, let's say the letters "XXX" and "YYY" represent certain words appropriate for the sentences.
Thank you for your help in advance.

1. This is the place to make your investment.
2. This is the place to have a quiet time with your family.
3. This is the place to play basketball (in or at?).
4. The word translated (as?) "XXX" means this.
5. The word is translated (as?) "YYY."

One and two are correct. You are right that 3 should not end with in or at. "The word translated as" would be best, and you can take out "this" from 4.

  • One and two are correct.

  • Your question about numbering the sentences is a little more complex.
  • The numbers are not part of the sentence, they do not add to the meaning of the sentence and you have correctly indicated this by using the full stop after them.
