Check-in, to check in (social media)

I heard these words in a movie, but can't seem to understand, how exactly they're used in a sentence and their accurate meaning (the only thing I'm sure about is that they have sth to do with social media). Do they mean: post sth, log in or something else? I've never used social media much myself, so maybe there are some features I'm not aware of. Can you please give me several examples, how to use them in a sentence and explain their meanings? I'll really appreciate it.

Usually used in a travel context: After we had checked in, we went to get something to eat. Check in = to register at a hotel and get a key to your room In social media, I suppose it means to log in so you can check your messages, likes, and friends.
