What does 'check in' mean? In this context, it seems like it means 'get admitted to the hospital as a patient'.

This is pretty unclear. I take it to mean that "he", having been informed by Mark of Tina's accident, wanted to visit Tina to see how she was doing. So "check in" means "stop by Tina's hospital room for a visit."

I can't find any definition that has the same meaning as you said here in the dictionary.

Can 'check in' mean 'to see how a person is doing when something bad happened to him but not necessary in the hospital?
