Chat

Hello everybody,
a guy laughed at me once because I said "Sorry, I was chatting with my friend on the phone": he replied: "is that a phone with a keyboard?"
My question is: isn't "to chat" used also as a synonym to "talk to" someone but in an easy way (I mean about something not so serious)? Do I have to use it only when I mean "chatting with someone through a computer"?

Thanks in advance Emotion: smile

Yes, it still means to talk aloud face-to-face; actually, the keyboard type of chatting is just a derivative of the vocal form. The guy was making a pleasant joke.

I don't think so! I've heard a lot of people using the term chat in daily speaking! The same has been stated in dictionary (Chat; friendly talking)

It's used quite a bit where I am.

"Just called to chat." (No real reason for my call except to be friendly.)

Even at work - "Let's chat about that on Monday - I have an idea that I want to share."

I think, my dear Francesca, that perhaps you have a reputation as an avid TCP chatter with your friend!

Hi,

chat - talk in a friendly, relaxed way.

That guy didn't have a good understanding of the word. You do.
Or maybe he was just making a joke?

What you said was fine. People were chatting on the phone (and in person) before the first computer was invented, and they were chatting (and calling
