charges didn't stick?

Hi everbody. Could you please explain the meaning of this sentence below?

--> He claimed she tried to kill him, but the charges didn't stick.

Here, 'the charges didn't stick' means 'could not be proven' or somethink like that? Or am I wrong?

Thanks in advance...

The police couldn't make the charges stick (= show them to be true).
