'Charge'

Is this correct English:

"I drank a beer at that posh pub, without first asking the CHARGE."

Note: I made some changes in the sentence that I originally heard in order to make its context clearer, but my doubt is whether it's correct or not to say 'charge' (as I had never heard that before).

It's understandable, but from what I usually hear, it's not idiomatic.

More likely, ... without asking the price OR ... without asking how much it cost.
