Which of the following sentences is / are correct? My favourite is definitely #1, but are the other two correct or idiomatic?

1 - Mr Smith is my favourite character in the show.
2- Mr Smith is my favourite character on the show.
3- Mr Smith is my favourite character of the show.

Thanks in advance

I would only say #1. The other two are certainly not idiomatic, not to say incorrect.

"character in the show" is applicable to any performance. "Character on the show" is applicable to TV." "Character of the show" means the nature of the show itself.

Right. I should have added that I was only referring to the context given by the OP.

Is "character on the show" applicable to a TV series or a film?

For example:

"He is my favourite character on The Walking Dead." or "He is my favourite character on the show The Walking Dead."

"He is my favourite character on Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Thanks

I'd just use 'on' for TV, either a single show or a series, but not for a film. "character in a film"

I might use 'in' for a TV series, though. It seems to me that people use either preposition in that case.
