Character Analysis HELP

Question

I need help starting my essay for my english 101 class. We are writing a character analysis on Louise Mallard, the main character from Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour". My introduction is confusing and I have no clue where to start. Can somebody please help me.

All of Chopin's work explores the role of women in the era and region in which she lived. She specifically exams women's lives in the microcosms of marriages that, because of the social restrictions of the day, provided women little outlet for self realization or fulfillment. Think about Mrs. Mallard's reaction to her husband's death and then reappearance in that context. Her unexpected reaction of joy was akin to that of a prisoner being released, despite the fact that her husband was a kind and good man. Her confusing feelings of sadness when he returned are understandable when viewed as one would view someone having to return to a cage, however gilded and with however kind a keeper. It is the examination of inner feelings and longings juxtaposed against very narrowly defined and restrictive outer behaviors that are the basis of the conflict in all of Chopin's work.

Thanks a lot.. yeh it is a very interesting subject. Just havent ever had to write a character analysis and im having trouble getting started.

It is always good to start a character analysis with a declaritive sentence beginning with the name of the character one is analyzing.

An example would be:

Louise Mallard is a fascinating character who encapsulates all the complexities of Chopin's discontent with the role of women in the comfortable classes in late 19th century America.

After this type of sentence (which you will create and put in your own words), you can go into details about the various aspects of Mrs. Mallard's character and use examples from her reactions and emotions as expressed in the story to illustrate them.

Just plow in; remember, you can always revise.

Hi,

My advice is always to make a plan on paper for an essay before you start to write it.

The plan can just be in brief point form.

eg If you want to discuss 3 aspects of the character, plan to have 3 body paragraphs in your essay, Think about what you want to say in each paragraph, and write it down in brief point form.

Then add an introduction paragraph and a conclusion paragraph.

Bluntly put, I see a lot of essays where the person just starts writing aimlessly and rambles on with no clear idea of what they want to say. You won't get a good mark if you do this.
