Changing/ in order to change

The protagonist is one of royal family members of Amber.
He made a date with Coral, a daughter of the prime minister from a neighboring country Begma.
And he went out with her, showing her the town, and he didn't keep her from going further away by herself.
He came back to the palace by himself. Furthermore, he was late for dinner party.
He is now talking to her elder sister Nayda. she asks him about whereabouts of her sister.

........................
"You mean you're not sure exactly where she is?"
I nodded.
"I'm not certain where she is at this moment," I said. "She could well be back in her room changing her clothes."
["Sign of Chaos" of The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny]
I'd like to know if I can replace "changing" with "in order to change."
Thank you in advance for your help.
