Change in appearance

Have I used the correct words and is it correct?
Plastic bottles can be altered physically by heat, be scratched whereas glass can't change in appearance.
Plastic if overheated can melt whereas gas won't.

Plastic bottles can be altered physically by heat or be scratched; whereas, glass can’t change in appearance. Plastic, if overheated, can melt; whereas glass cannot. (When comparing, use the same verb form (can melt – cannot melt; or will melt – won’t melt).)
