Champion as in supporter, fighter in this context?

One of the meanings of "champion" is supporter, fighter in favor of good causes or minorities. However, here it doesn't sound right to me. As far as I know climate change is not a good thing, so an environmentalist wouldn't be proud to support that, don't you think. Or am I missing something?

Excerpt taken from an article on The Guardian about climate change:

Romney's energy plan "mindblowing" says climate change champion

Climate change champion Tom Steyer warns we are all tied to each other's success or failure

Scientists may be reluctant to link Hurricane Sandy with climate change, but extreme events could be the tipping point that wakes America up to the seriousness of global warming, according to Tom Steyer, probably the richest climate change champion in the US, and arguably the most effective.

I don't think you are missing anything; I think you have seen through some slightly sloppy journalism. However, the general reader will overlook that subtlety. Mr Steyer is supporting the reality of climate change, in contradistinction to those who deny its existence.
