Champing at the bit, kill off the franchise for good

Washington, Aug 3 (ANI): Daniel Craig has revealed that he loves playing James Bond and is eagerly waiting to reprise his role as the iconic British spy for the third time in the next installment of the hit movie franchise.
The movie has been put on hold indefinitely due to finance problems with studio MGM but the actor is hoping the difficulties to resolve soon.
"The new Bond movie is on hold but I am champing at the bit to get going on it as quickly as possible. I love playing Bond - I don't want to be away from it for too long," Contactmusic quoted Craig as telling Absolute Now.
It was recently reported that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are said to be concerned that delays to the 23rd movie in the series could kill off the franchise for good.
"They're completely panicked that if they go five, six years without a Bond movie, it'll be over. They don't want to kill the golden goose," an insider said. (ANI)

Please explain to me the highlighted parts.

Kill off = bring to an end. A character in a soap opera is killed off.

Franchise is a business term. Starbucks is a franchise - the owner of a coffee shop pays Starbucks for the right to sell the Stabucks brand, and agrees to do everything the way Starbucks want (so only Starbucks products).
