Challenged

Hi, The first option the dictionary shows me for "challenged" is "appealing" but I think that challenge like in "to face a challenge" won't be a wrong meaning right? what fits better?

"French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte discovered this equation when his attempt to dominate Europe was challenged by an alliance of middle powers and was ultimately defeated"
