Is it that the one chair was thrown or many chairs during that row mentioned in the above sentence?

It would suggest more than one chair to me, but the sentence does not make it clear. It may have been only one, though if I were describing that particular situation I would be more likely to write "...where a chair was thrown during the course of a row about delegate selection".
