In the US, "certification" is a matter which falls under the jusisdiction of the states.  Some states require licenses to practice certain professions and others don't.  Whether or not a degree is required to obtain a license, or whether a state exam must be passed, is, again, a matter which the states decide.

I'm afraid I've struck out on this. There are plenty of people on the net from all over the world who call themselves "certified economists." And there are plenty of institutions which will "certify you in economics." Each instutution has it's own requirements.
I have yet to find a professional US national organization which certifies its members in a way similar to that used by "Certified Public Accountants."
I find no state agencies responsible for licensing economists, in the way doctors and plumbers are licensed.
And I find no institution of higher learning which offers a degree (bacalaureate or otherwise) called "Certified Economist['s] Degree."
But every major College and University offers a serious degree program in Economics. You can get a BA / BS in economics, a Master's Degree in economics, and a PhD in economics.

Hi,

Some of my ESL students have told me they were 'an economist', but I discovered that they meant what I would call 'an accountant'. Is there any possibility that this is what you mean?

You might find it useful to look at this page on the net which offers all things to all people interested in certification:

Just make sure you study the fine print. Education is a big business.

You'll see that the "designation" they're talking about (CEPA) isn't defined in the text. But you can see it in the URL: ("certified economic policy analyst"). "Board Certified" means "certified by their board."
This is an example of really good advertising.

I'd say that if you receive this "designation," (that is, if they give you one of these certificates) you may call yourself a "certified economist."
