Certain time phrases doing the job of tense change possible?

Hi. Please help. Would the following two sentences mean the same (or perhaps - roughly the same)? If they are the same, would you say the phrases "for the past/last/previous two years" can sort of do the job of denoting the sense of continuity that the use of a past perfect continuous would do? (I hope I have written clearly to reflect what I wanted to ask - not sure, though)

He met a person who had been suffering from an illness for two years.

He met a person who was suffering from an illness for the past/last/previous two years.
