Vocabulary

ceramic / pottery

Hello everyone,

I’d like to know the differences between “ceramic” and “pottery”. Does “pottery” only refer to pots made out of clay, while “ceramic” can be used for anything, e.g., tiles, jars, bowls, cups, spoons, vases, candlesticks, censers?

Thanks.

Clay is the main material used in pottery. On the other hand, ceramics covers a broad range of inorganic, non-metallic materials. Pottery can be considered as a branch of ceramics.

Pottery is not strictly limited to pots. It includes plates, cups, bowls and so on.
A pottery is the place where pottery is made.

Thanks for your replies, Nikoo and Jay. Now I've understood that "pottery" can be:

1. Ware, especially kitchen ware;
2. The craft of a potter;
3. The place where pottery is made.

Thank you.
