Centered upon a quadrangle?

Hi everyone.

Could you tell me what the sentence in bold means? Could you give me a visual idea of the buildings? What does "centred upon a quadrangle" mean?

"Across the road behind a rampart of ancient elms lay Brookfield, russet under its autumn mantle of creeper. A group of eighteenth century buildings centred upon a quadrangle, there were acres of playing-fields beyond."

Thanks!
