HiHe was the center and I was the quarter back on the high school football team that won the county championship long time ago.I understand that probably one played in the center of the field and the other, where? Are there any other terms describing the same situation, to make it clearer?

"Center" and "quarterback" are standard in american football.

The ball is placed at the center of the line of scrimmage by the referee. The offensive player, known as the center, straddles the ball (facing forward) and begins play by firing the ball from between his legs to the quarterback, who is behind him. A fullback would be farther back yet.
The quarterback calls the play (the plan) and usually throws the forward passes.

The line of scrimmage is not in the middle of the field, but is established by the referee at the end of each play, depending on whether the offensive team has advanced the ball or lost ground.

If the team in possession of the ball has succeeded in advancing it to within one yard of the defending team's end zone, then at the beginning of the next play, the center's position will be on the defender's one yard line.
