Can I say,

(a) John celebrated the party.

(b) John celebrated in the party.

(c) John celebrated birthday in the party.

(a) and (b) don't make sense to me. A party is not usually an object (purpose) of a celebration. (c) John celebrated his (usually we put the number here, such as 20th) birthday at the party.
