Cautiously or carefully?

Suddenly the gunfire stopped. The police officer cautiously/carefully looked out from behind his car.

I can't figure out which of "cautiously" and "carefully" I should use here? I have checked dictionaries but still couldn't find out. Could you please help me.

You act cautiously when potential danger is involved; you act carefully to avoid making a mistake. Does that help you to decide?
