Causes of Sleepiness

When the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, I had problem with sleepiness. My schedule was changed in work, school, and daily activities, so I felt sleepy all the time. Sleepiness in the workplace, in the classroom, on the highways is a serious problem, it is a cause of accidents and bad outcomes. There are three possible causes why some people feel sleepiness all the time: schedules change, diseases, addictions.

First, schedules change is a reason of sleepiness because people can do excessive work hours, not enough sleep at night, and weight loss process. In America, shift workers such as doctors, police offices, and firefighters are usually sleepy because they cannot sleep as the body’s biological clock. When they have excessive works, which require constantly 8 to 10 hours, they will be sleepy the next day. Shift workers are harmful, as they are difficult to create a well sleep full 7-8 hours. Another reason of sleepiness is not enough sleep at night. When I change traditional courses to online courses, I get into a habit of staying up late to study. Sometimes I study all night before final week, so I am extremely tired and sleepy in the next morning. Moreover, many people may not have a sufficient sleep because they use too much caffeine and alcohol. Lacking sleep may cause of excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy. Besides, some ladies tend to skip meals and exceedingly work out, so they need more time to sleep and recover. Thus, they always feel sleepy during weight loss process. In short, schedules change causes sleepiness in many ways: work shift, lack of sleep, and lose weight.

Next, depression, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy are common diseases causes of problems sleepiness. Depression cause excessive daytime sleepiness, oversleeping, or sleep disorder. For example, my brother had trouble sleepiness during the day because of depression. He felt depress, tired, and sleepy all the time although he tried to sleep more. However, his sleep was disrupted over and over. The relationship between depression and sleepiness are relevant. In fact, sleepiness is an important symptom of mental health issues. Another disease causes sleepiness is sleep apnea. Some people think they sleep well, but sleep apnea stops their breathing throughout the night. People may not know each interruption which wakes them for a moment. Thus, it is a common cause of sleepiness although they spend eight hours in bed. Narcolepsy is a disease which makes people fall asleep suddenly throughout the day. Their sleep will have many symptoms, such as sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and bad dreams. Therefore, they may not have a good- quality sleep at night and always sleepy during daytime. In brief, depression, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy make sleepiness and fatigue for people.

Last, smartphone, drug, and gambling addictions are reasons of sleepiness. Smartphone addiction is popular to young people because of social media, internet, and dating apps. People spend too much time use smartphones at night, so they have daytime sleepiness. For example, my best friend, Linh, usually uses smartphone to watch her friend’s posts on social media overnight because she does not stop scrolling down their stories. Therefore, she is extremely tired and sleepy despite she must go to school and work the next day. Her addiction will throw off her biological clock, so it will change her sleep schedule and create daytime sleepiness. In addition, sleepiness is an expression of drug addicts who use cannabis or marijuana. Those drugs make people drowsy, dizzy, and drugged when people use them. Drugs create feeling asleep faster, but sleeps were interrupted by delusions. Drug addictions affect not only sleepiness but also long- term health. Gambling addiction causes sleepiness because many people spend their full-time to play game. I know a neighbor who use his money to go casino every day without sleep, so he is always glassy, exhausted and drowsy all the time. People cannot control their addictions until it affects their health. In summary, sleepiness comes from smartphone, drug, and gambling addictions.

In summary, schedules change, diseases, addictions are main three causes of sleepiness. People with excessive daytime sleepiness are at risk of vehicle accidents, work accidents, or long-term health issues. People should manage the same sleeping time schedule, avoid addictions, and talk to the doctor if excessive sleepiness could not fix by some lifestyle changes.
