cause/result?

The bad weather ........................ the plane being delayed.

A. caused
B. made
C. resulted in
D. created

I think both A and C are correct. But answer key reads C. Why? Explanation please. Thanks.

After cause we need an infinitive (verb+to)-- the bad weather caused the plane to be delayed. After resulted in we need a noun phrase.
