Caucasus vs. the Caucasus

Could you tell me the difference between "Caucasus and the Caucasus"?
Maybe, in English they differ "Caucasus"-3 Caucasian countries (Georgia, Armenia and Aze.) from "the Caucasus"- the mountain range? I my guess correct?
