'categorical data' and 'continuous data'

'The Mobility Test provides categorical data on standing, walking, transferring and continuous data on endurance and speed that, when combined, provide an assessment of mobility independence'

Regarding the context, I assume that 'continuous data' is the data you have to gather during a long time observing your subject continuously, but I'm not sure.

Moreover, I totally don't understand what is ' categorical data', since 'categorical' is ' expressed clearly', as I looked up in dictionary, but that meaning doesn't match this sentenceEmotion: sad. I think may be ' categorical' here has the opposite meaning to 'continuous', that is the data you have immediately after the test. However, that meaning doesn't exist in a dictionary, thus I wonder if my assumption is right.

Could you please give me some explanation? Thank you very much.

I don't think that they are mutually exclusive, Kirakira. See if you can apply these definitions meaningfully to your text: Categorical variables represent types of data which may be divided into groups. Examples of categorical variables are race, ***, age group, and educational level.

  • Continuous data is information that can be measured on a continuum or scale.
  • Continuous data can have almost any numeric value and can be meaningfully subdivided into finer and finer increments, depending upon the precision of the measurement system.

Oh the definitions you provided are very helpful for me to understand the sentence. This is how I understand it:

' Standing, walking, transferring' are assessed by data that can be categorized into groups. For example, the researcher may classify one's ability to stand as 'stable, normal, stable'..something like that, but he can not measure the ability to stand exactly

>By the way, if you don't mind, could you please provide me with the sources of the definitions

Why don't you make yourself an Yahoo search for part of MM's definintions?

"Continuous data is information that can be measured"
(quotations marks are required)

You will find them.
