Catch up with smth?

Hi there!

Can I use the form "catch up with" near a non-prsonal object, such as in this example:

The consumption of refined oil caught up with that of crude oil in the last decade.

(meaning: in the past, the consumption of refined oil was smaller than, but now has become equal to that of crude oil)?

Thanks!
