Catch 22 - Again

McWatt shared his tent now with Nately, who was away in courting the sleepy whore he had fallen so deeply in love with there who was bored with her work and bored with him too. McWatt was crazy. He was a pilot and flew his plane as low as he dared over Yossarian’s tent as often as he could, just to see how much he could frighten him, and loved to go buzzing with a wild, close roar over (a) the wooden raft floating on empty oil drums out past the sand bar at the immaculate white beach where the men went swimming naked. Sharing a tent with a man who was crazy wasn’t easy, but Nately didn’t care. He was crazy, too, and (b) had gone every free day to (c) work on the officers’ club that Yossarian had not helped build.

(a) does not mean raft made with empty oil drums, I guess. Only the raft that was floating on top of empty oil drums, I guess........

(b) Why “had gone” is used here, not “went”? Does it mean, he had gone there, before he was crazy? The use of different tense, “was” and “had gone” is intended to show the difference of time?

(c) “work on” is used here, not “work at”. So, does this mean “to participate in the job of building the club”? Not to work inside the club?

Top answer

(a) does not mean raft made with empty oil drums, I guess. Only the raft that was floating on top of empty oil drums, I guess. To me, the empty oil drums constitute the lower construction of the raft, the upper construction is wooden.
