Cat tail or cat's tail?

I usually hear the genitive about parts of the body as The cat's tail. Is "the cat tail" uncommon? Does it sound right to a native ear?

ej. The cat tail is white.

Thanks

I know. I was wondering about A cat tail without the genitive, if it sounds odd at all to a native speaker.
Thanks.
