Are the sentences below correct in terms of semantics and punctuation? Would you please help me rewrite the intended meaning in a natural English?

The moment the Chancellor of the university saw me in the job interview, he —much to my surprise— said smilingly: ‘’Well, we’re not choosing an actor for a particular part in a film.’’

I'm not sure, but he added that I was unusually tall and handsome, which was something I wasn't expecting to hear from a Chancellor in a job interview.

If I may be allowed, sometimes university chancellors make silly remarks, I should think. I can't really know without asking him which may appear impertinent in the circumstances. Also interviewers challenge people to see their reactions. I think I was wise to let him off with it.
