cast spell on a gem

It could still be a fun outing for a generation, which is unaware that male bonding could be cool in our films even before Dil Chahta Hai happened, but for the rest the evil eye of consumerism has finally cast its spell on a gem.

Hi My understanding is that the film has been remade and, in some ways, the new film is not as good as the original The original was a special piece of work: it was a gem The latest version takes the same ideas, but changes them: it casts a spell over them And why does it do that? It seems that it is done to reach a wide audience: to get as many people into the cinema as possible: that is consumerism An evil eye is the magical power of looking at someone so that harm is caused to that person So the film director has taken a new look at the story; but his look is not kind: it has spoilt what was once a good film.
