Carry out data checking

Hi,

Question:
Is it suitable to use carry out.
If not, could you please suggest some words for me?

Sentence:
I would carry out data checking when I worked in the marketing department.

My opinion:
I know that there are some better words, eg, be responsible for and be in charge of.
But I want to know whether carry out is correct or not.

Yes, it is OK, but not the best choice here with the gerund. It sounds awkward. It would sound better with a noun: 'I carried out the data checks...'
