Carrier pigeons were used to transport messages back to their home coop

Hi

I couldn't find any definition of "http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/coop" which fits here. Could you please help? Thanks.

During the First and Second World Wars, carrier pigeons were used to transport messages back to their home coop behind the lines.

Thanks, MalRey.

The M-W also offers the definition you quoted. Let me rephrase my question. Is "coop" functioning as a noun or verb? In my opinion, I don't think it's a verb in the given context. But I don't understand how it can work as a noun either. Help me, please.
