"carriage returns"?

Hi,

I'm translating the help section of an iPhone app that works with voice commands. Do you have any idea what the underlined part means? I'm not even sure where this context comes from.

New Line starts the following text on a new line, and New Paragraph begins a new paragraph (effectively 1 and 2 carriage returns, respectively).

Thank you,

M

A carriage return is one use of the ENTER key on your computer. In the days of typewriters the carriage (the part that moved back and forth) actually returned to a position where the next character typed would be on the next line. _____________________________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (New Line = One carriage return from previous line) ______________________________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (New Paragraph = Two carriage returns from previous line) CJ
