Carnival?

Hi
Here in Europe we have the Carnival. It's a national celebration where you are allowed to pull pranks without consequences (provided they are nothing illegal of course).
Is there anything similar in the US? I'm talking about a nationwide celebration or something very popular. St Patrick's Day maybe?

Thanks.

Ok, on Halloween children do tricks only if you don't give them treats. I think I'll pick April fool's day.

That's an Irish thing.

Yes I know. I remember it from an episode of "According to Jim" with Jim Belushi, where he goes around pulling pranks. That's why I thought the celebration was about pulling pranks, which it is not.
