Caress VS fondle

What is the difference between caress and fondle?

And also can I say 'caress the orphan's head' or is it a 'sexual' connotated word?

Fondle does not always have a sexual connotation. It means to touch gently and in a loving way, or to touch in a sexual way.

I agree, Louise, that it's not always, but the sexual connotation gets so much use that it's probably best to avoid it unless you're really, really clear that it's not sexual. The puppies are probably okay. I can see someone thinking the second one was a pedophile with a foot fetish. Well AH I think GG is right and you should avoid using 'fondle' for non sexual connotations unless you make it absolutely clearly understood.
