Cared not

Example:
He did not care to create more confusion in their family.

Can the above sentence also be rewritten in this form using 'cared not to'?

He cared not to create more confusion in their family.

As an aside, I think the inversion "cared not for" is perhaps a little more common, or current, than "cared not to." Perhaps the difference lies in "to" being the infinitive marker and "for" being a preposition. (I hope "care to" isn't an idiom!
