Care to try for best five out of eight

The following dialogue is between two chess players at the end of a game. Does it mean

1. "how about playing another game the way that I have 5 pieces and you 8 pieces"

or

2. "you have lost 4 games so far, we can develop the competition to 8 games, so that you might have a chance to win a game"

Dialogue:

A. checkmate! Care to try for best five out of eight?

B: No, Thank you.

My last reply was wrong and I can't delete or edit it.

If the guy had lost four games already he would need to win five straight games for a series victory, so the match would have to extended to best-of-nine.

It doesn't mean #1.

#2 is an odd thing to say, unless the speaker is trying to trick the listener into thinking he can win the 8-game competition.
I don't know why he says 'best'.
