Care "about"

Hello everyone!

Which is more correct?
He doesn't care what people think of him.
He doesn't care "about" what people think of him.

Are they both correct? If so, does "about" in the second sentence convey extra meaning or are they the same?

Thanks a lot!

about doesn't add anything. I would leave it out. I'm at a loss to explain it grammatically, however.
