Card not working

Hi, the librarian couldn't scan my ID card to check out a book, and he asked "did it use to work before?".

I answered, " I worked last year. but it didn't work last week so I guess it started being broken around that time."

Could you please correct it for me ? Thank you.

mezzopiano I answered, " I worked last year. " When you say "around that time", what time do you mean? If all you know is that it worked a year ago but not last week, couldn't it have "broken" at any time over that year?
