What is the meaning of 'captured the imaginations' and 'have a powerful hold on the human imagination' in the following examples ?
ex1) The legend has had a powerful hold on the human imagination.
ex2) They captured the imaginations of the audience.

"To capture" and "to have a powerful hold on" both mean essentially the same thing in this context. The legend, and the players have succeeded in taking over control of our imaginations.

Probably so. Different people have different conceptions of consciousness. Can you be interested in something passively? Does "interest" = "attention"?
