Capitalize internet?

Hi,

My English teacher said that Internet must be written with a capital I. But I remember reading that is was no longer necessary to do this.

Do you have any idea what the official way to write "Internet" is?

I did find an old topic on this forum about this matter, but it was outdated.

  • I imagine your teacher is being technical about the preceding definite article, however, I believe it is now commonly written in lower case.

Mostly I have seen the word 'Internet'. However, I would vote for the both 'internet' and 'Internet'.

It shouldn't be 'on Internet'. It should be on the 'Internet'.

Your teacher is 100% correct. Internet is a proper noun just as your name, your country and your language is. It is not now commonly accepted to spell it with a lower case 'i' as was said in one of the answers.

Of course Internet is capitalized. It's always capitalized on the Television, and in the Newspaper. People even say it with a capital letter when they're talking on the Radio or the Telephone. In fact, I've even seen it capitalized in Books and on Signs beside the Road.

Perhaps, Anon, you should consult a stye guide instead of your sense of sarcasm. The AP style guide, as well as several others in North America, still maintain the capital I in Internet. I have no doubt that it will reach lower case status within a decade, but it's not there on a universal level yet.

As a matter of fact, "radio" was often capitalized in years following its invention. Accepted usage changed, editors decided it was an improper noun instead of a proper noun. Perhaps the change also had something to do with the popular sense of radio shifting from a specific new technology to a general place familiar to everyone. I think both "internet" and "radio" could be argued to be both prop
