When it comes to mentioning East, West, North, and South in text (specifically physics texts pertaining to motion calculations in given directions), should they be capitalized or not? I'm sure there's a convention on the matter which I am unaware of.
Similarly, in reference to earth (i.e. "The plane was moving 100 m/s east relative to the earth"), capital or not? I currently use 'earth' when referring to ground and 'Earth' when referring to the planet on the whole.
Thanks

Do not capitalize directions. Such words are capitalized only when part of a regional name, as in East Timor.
