Capitalization of Geographical Terms

Hi,

Which is correct?

1) ...growing up in that Midwestern rural town.

2) ...growing up in that midwestern rural town.

does the answer change if "that" becomes "a" ?

Hi, The general rule in English is that we capitalise adjectives that derive from capitalised proper nouns. Since "the Midwest" is a proper noun - a name of an area - the derived adjective "Midwestern" is also capitalised. Anders :-)
