Capital state?

Hi , I'm looking for the appropriate word to describe a State that is the most important one in an Industry among all States in the U.S. I kind of fell in love with the word "capital" ie "Michigan is the car capital of the US" but then it doesn't feel right to address a State as "capital" as this is a title for cities. What would you suggest? Thanks

We often use capital with the name of a state, or even a city, to mean the principal of that category. California is the capital state of the film industry; Florida is the citrus capital; Colorado is the skiing capital; New York City is the fashion capital;New Orleans is the jazz capital; etc. [ My examples may not be what others would select, but the idea is there.
