Capital of Japan

We say, "Tokyo is the capital of Japan." Japan has only one capital.
The capital of Japan was in Nara in the 8th century, then the capital was relocated to Kyoto.

Are the following expressions correct?

1. Nara was a capital of Japan in the past. (or should it be the capital of Japan? The capital was located in Kyoto later.)
2. Nara was the capital of Japan in the 8th century.
