Capital letters of months of the year in middle of sentence

I have always used capital letters for the months of the year when writing,wherever they occour. This was challenged and I would like clarification please.

Capital letters instead of lower case letters, yes, but it is better to spell out the name of the month or use standard abbreviations (e.g., 'Aug').
